"THE STRUGGLE TO BE REAL

Happy Thanksgiving, NVC!

This is probably my favorite holiday of the year because it means inevitably that I will be spending it with people I love. It also directs my attention around service to others and of course an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for a remarkable year.

I remember discovering the joy in service some time ago while volunteering at Andre House in downtown Phoenix, which serves meals to the homeless. My task on this particular day was scooping up goulash and placing it on the tray in front of me as each person sidestepped up in line. However, what I took on as an even more important role, was making it a point to look each individual in the eye and smile. The depth of connection I felt and graciousness by which these individuals received their food was both joyfilled and humbling. Nearing the end of the evening, a gentleman stepped up and exclaimed that he was on my side of the dinner line just three weeks prior serving just as I was. I believe it was in that moment that I more clearly understood what it all meant. Rachel Naomi Remen sums it perfectly as she describes the difference between helping and serving. "Helping incurs debt. When you help someone, they owe you one. But serving, like healing is mutual. There is no debt. I am also served as the person I am serving." In other words, we are all equals in this thing called life... Better yet, we are all One. This is the connection I felt with this gentleman that night and for that matter, all that I had the joy of serving.

I have two invitations for you this week as we cross that threshold into the holidays. First, tonight, we have a special Thanksgiving Eve service that starts at 6:30 PM in the Sanctuary. Special because we will be launching a year-long program here at NVC of feeding the homeless and struggling in this community and beyond. Your "ticket" into this service will be in the form of canned foods, so bring as many cans as you can carry.

Second, join me this Sunday as I conclude our monthly theme of authenticity in "The Struggle to be Real."

In Love and Gratitude,
