After months of waiting and preparation, I’m thrilled that the Social Uplift Ministry starts on Wednesday! One of my favorite things about Science of Mind is that we don’t tell people what to think, rather we teach people how to think. Essentially, we teach people how to identify their own values and ideas, and then assist each individual as they walk out those values in their own life. The essential skills of critical thinking and congruent living are sorely lacking in the public dialog these days. Learning to be more understanding and accepting of those with different opinions is so necessary in today’s world, especially when we discuss controversial topics. Respectful dialog and an open mind can go far when seeking to build connection within a community. Creating an environment where we can share honestly and honor differences is at the heart of a radically inclusive community.
A key element to the Social Uplift Ministry is choice. This is why we are tackling these topics on a Wednesday night rather than from the Sunday pulpit. Many congregants are chomping at the bit to address the big issues that are affecting our communities right now, like gun ownership, transgender safety and immigration. Social Uplift Ministry will give each subject three full session, offering individuals the opportunity to fully explore their thoughts and feelings. If that sounds great to you, please come and join us! If there is a part of you that worries that this ministry may become too political or biased, please consider attending a session. I truly believe that the balanced, respectful and conscious nature of the curriculum will set your heart at ease. And if this idea doesn’t interest you at all, no worries. New Vision Center will continue to offer all of the traditional programming you love, as we strive to build a community that works for everyone.
