Brené Brown, in her book, Dare to Lead, writes about “Living into Our Values.” The members of the recent study group, led by Rev. Lezli Goodwin, were asked to select three values that are the most important to us. One of my values is freedom; I found this interesting because I often felt trapped. Perhaps this is why it is now an essential part of my life—it took me so long to claim it.
One of the ways that feeling trapped showed up for me is that I felt like I was existing and waiting for something to change. An example is when I was remaining in a difficult marriage until my children grew up. My mind was on the future and how life would be different. If only I could change the external picture, my life would fall into place.
How grateful I am that I found Science of Mind teachings (my spiritual journey began after I was divorced). I know that change begins within me before it ever is seen on the external level.
It is also clear to me that I always have a choice. A Course in Miracles says, “In this world the only remaining freedom is the freedom of choice; always between two choices or two voices,” C-1.7. One voice represents the ego and speaks first and often is the loudest. It comes from fear and plays in a world of, “I win/you lose.” The other voice is based on love and sees wholeness and unity. Which voice are you listening to?
A Course in Miracles study group meets in the Education Bldg. on Monday nights from 6:30-8:00 pm. New and continuing students welcome.
