We live in a dualistic world, which means that we are always at choice between two thought systems. The two opposites are known by many names, e.g., fear or love; the ego or the Voice for God; or illusions or truth. Most of us are able to distinguish a fear thought from one that is based on love. The ego’s voice is loud and is generally trying to get something that would make us feel special or different from everyone else, while the Voice for God is that still, small voice that assures me that I have everything I need. Illusions are always illusions of differences, and the Truth is changeless.
Being a member of a radically-inclusive community helps me to focus on the Truth and not the illusions. A Course in Miracles, in the Manual for Teachers, #8.3, says, Where do all these differences come from? Certainly they seem to be in the world outside. Yet it is the mind that interprets the eyes’ messages and gives them “meaning.” … What is seen as “reality” is simply what the mind prefers. Its hierarchy of values is projected outward, and it sends the body’s eyes to find it. The body’s eyes will never see except through differences. … Only the mind evaluates their messages, and so only the mind is responsible for seeing. It alone decides whether what is seen is real or illusory, desirable or undesirable, pleasurable or painful.
I am reminded once again that it is my mind alone that is responsible for what I see, and I am free to change my mind if I see differences between us that are based on religious beliefs, body type, political party affiliation, sexual orientation, or any other label. I can choose to see the Christ consciousness shining in each member of my community, or I can observe the places where we might be different. Which choice brings me more joy; more love; or helps me to become more peaceful?
If you want to learn more about Truth and illusions, consider attending A Course in Miracles study group. We meet in the Education Bldg. on Monday nights from 6:30-8:00 pm. New and continuing students welcome.
