Dear Beloved Community,
Nearly two decades ago, while taking the previous version of the Foundations Class, I encountered a statement in one of the assessment tools that stopped me in my tracks: “Giving and Receiving are the same.” My immediate, visceral response was, “No, they are not!” That moment became one of my most profound spiritual Aha’s—an invitation to explore a truth that has continued to unfold throughout my ministry.
Over the years, I have discovered that Giving and Receiving are not two separate acts, but two expressions of the same spiritual flow. When we give, we open ourselves to generosity, to the joy of offering. When we receive, we allow ourselves to be blessed, to be nourished by the gifts of others. Both require openness, humility, and trust. Both invite us into deeper connection.
This season, as we navigate the holidays, the dance of Giving and Receiving offers us mindful tools for balance. Notice where you resist receiving, or where giving feels obligatory rather than joyful. Each awareness is a doorway into growth.
Join me this Sunday as we explore this profound truth together. Until then, I invite you to simply notice your own thoughts and feelings about Giving and Receiving—and how they shape your experience of the season.
With Love & Light,
Rev. Karin
